Built in 1878, the one-thousand-seat Synagogue was the hub of the Neolog Jewish population in Oradea. Prior to the Second World War, the Jewish population in Oradea was approximately thirty thousand strong. While posing for a portrait in his home in Oradea, Romania on January 9, 2015, Bӧhm described his ordeal. “After spending only a few days at Auschwitz, I was transferred to Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp in Austria along with my brother. Once there, we worked in the rock mines along with other prisoners. We carved out underground bunkers to house German arms production. My brother did not survive until the camp was liberated by the Americans on the 5th of May 1945.” Mauthausen-Gusen deployed a principle of “Vernichtung durch Arbeit” or “Extermination through labor.” Bӧhm and other prisoners were forced to dig through rock for the creation of German factories that produced the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter aircraft. The two religions in Oradea once worshiped peacefully side-by-side prior to the 1930s, but as fascism rose to power, a fierce anti-Semitism and a strong sense of nationalism and xenophobia followed closely. Oradea’s Christian population did little, if anything, to stop the brutality perpetrated against its Jewish population, as was often the case across Europe, and, in fact, many took part in it. Today, reconciliation between the two religions has been achieved in many regions of the world. However, Romania still falls far behind in recognizing its role in the atrocities of the Holocaust. Deported in 1944, Bloom was later transferred by the Germans to the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria. The camp was liberated by American soldiers in 1945. After the death of his wife, Bloom lives alone in his home in Oradea. With so few survivors today, many historical sites across Romania are in various states of disrepair. Some funds come from abroad, but cemeteries require near constant maintenance.
